STYX & YES @ JONES BEACH CONCERT PICTORIAL

Went a little off the hard rock path and saw Styx and Yes at Jones Beach last night. It's a co-headlining tour and this night Styx was up first after a short warm-up act. I should have called it a night there. Yes unfortunately was abysmal. Steve Howe still can play a mean axe but as a whole it was a really bad sounding shell of what Yes used to be. Benoit David does at times sound like Jon Anderson but it is very obvious that it is not Anderson but the lead singer of a Yes cover band. That alone is not the problem here. The band does not sound tight which is odd because all these guys have played these songs for decades and should sound in sync without much effort. Considering this tour they are playing an 8-song set with one encore they should be better prepared.
Styx on the other hand were a surprise. They really rocked their tales off. Although they were considered the opening act this night they played the bigger and better set. 12 songs and one encore. All the hits. Lots of passion and seemed to have a lot of fun playing too. A mostly Yes crowd were sitting and on their hands when it started but were all on their feet and singing along to "Come Sail Away" and "Renegade" at the end. Tommy Shaw gives an all out performance and was the stand out performer of the night but Styx overall rocked with a passion that is infectious. Nice touch bringing out one of the founding brothers on bass, Chuck Panozzo, for the last several songs.
Styx having been touring and touring in recent years and show no signs of letting up. I definitely think music fans will enjoy a night out with Styx. I can't say the same for Yes who sadly were just not worth time or money this night.
