SIXX A.M. is the side project of Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx. The lineup consists of Sixx, DJ Ashba & James Michael. SIXX A.M. is based in Los Angeles and originally formed in 2007 and is a hard rock band. However Motley Crue fans should not expect Crue II with this band. The only similarities between the two bands is, well, Nikki Sixx. In fact, some Crue fans may in fact dislike the music of SIXX A.M.. Especially if they are expecting it to be Crue-like music.
SIXX A.M. have released "This Is Gonna Hurt". Their first full length CD since their debut CD, 2007's "The Heroin Diaries Soundtrack". They did release an 8 song EP, "Live Is Beautiful" in 2008. "This Is Gonna Hurt" is a collection of eleven tracks which show off some very creatively written songs. There is certainly an effort here as well to make the entire CD radio airplay friendly. James Michael's strong and passionate vocals along with a melodic sound throughout will in fact get some of these tracks on the airwaves.
Just as SIXX A.M.'s debut CD was based on Nikki Sixx's book of the same name, "The Heroin Diaries Soundtrack". "This Is Gonna Hurt" is based on Nikki Sixx's latest book titled "This Is Gonna Hurt: Music, Photography And Life Through The Distorted Lens Of Nikki Sixx". Thus the songs on the CD are supposed to compliment the various chapters in the book. I have not finished the book so I will not use it in my thoughts here or try to tie the two together for you.
There is a great flow to the CD with a rough sounding opener, the title track, "This Is Gonna Hurt". That is followed up by the first single, "Lies Of The Beautiful People" which shows off Michael's vocal range and has a definite sing-along chorus. The sound here certainly captures your attention as does some of the subject matter. Unless of course you like a rougher more metal sound. There is the hauntingly dark "Deadlihood"contrasted nicely by the ever so soft and tender ballad, "Smile". The CD rounds out nicely with the darker but subdued "Skin". A unique collection of songs and subject matter throughout.
Whether or not you enjoy this CD one thing is unmistakable. SIXX A.M. certainly has their own sound and their sound has a range to it that provides a little something for everyone. It will be interesting to see if this side project grows into something more than a side project because I would love to see where their collective creative juices will take them next.
