Back in the fall of 2007 Heaven & Hell filmed their iconic March 30, 2007 performance at Radio City Music Hall in New York City and released it back then in the fall of 2007 on standard DVD. Although it was released as a standard DVD it was actually filmed in high definition. Thus on May 17, 2011 it was released for the first time in high definition on Blu-Ray.
Heaven & Hell is Ronnie James Dio on vocals, Tony Iommi on guitar, Geezer Butler on bass and Vinnie Appice on drums. This group recorded and toured together from 1980-1982 and again in 1991-1992 as Black Sabbath. The foursome reunited in 2006 to record three new songs that were added to the compilation "Black Sabbath: The Dio Years". That went so well that in 2007 they embarked on a concert tour. Now Tony Iommi owns the name Black Sabbath but the group decided to tour and continue on under the name Heaven & Hell which is the title of the first Black Sabbath album with Ronnie. Heaven & Hell remained together until the unfortunate and untimely death of the great Ronnie James Dio in May 2010 due to stomach cancer.
That magical night in March 2007 marked the first time in fifteen years this foursome performed live and the success of this legendary show is credited for the forming of the tour that immediately followed. The success of that tour is credited for the recording of a new album and further touring by these legendary performers curtailed only by Ronnie's untimely demise.
The performance captured here is exceptional. The quality of the musicianship and the manner it which they gelled on stage it was like they had been playing together live the previous fifteen years as opposed to the fact that they were disbanded. The hard driving sound, powerful riffs and thunderous beats went on for approximately two hours and would make musicians half the age of these gentlemen envious of their energy and non-stop showmanship.
This release is not only how this performance was meant to be seen it is a great document of how great this group was. When you realize how big and important Black Sabbath was, to lose their lead singer and be lucky enough to wind up with Ronnie James Dio on vocals is just magical and it's great to have a permanent record of that magic.
Everything from the original standard definition release is here. The new version, the better version, also includes an interview with the band. This is essential viewing for any metal head and non-metal heads will have a hard time arguing the greatness of this performance, the material and the God given talent of these four men.
